You Should All Take a Walk on the Yellow Brick Road
By Dominique Williams
– East Anchorage High School

The opening night of the Wizard of Oz on April 27, 2010 was a fun and whimsical night in Anchorage. All the actors lit up the stage with their flawless performance. The classic, “Over the Rainbow,” started the night with energy from the young lead, Cassie Okenka.

As the story went on the musicality and intensity became stronger. From the ensemble the audience was wowed with dance moves and more. A favorite piece of the night was “Jitterbug,” where both leads and the ensemble took part in a jazzy dance extravaganza. The special effects in this were also striking. From the digital projections to the sound and the lights this truly created a world all it’s own, and brought the audience to Emerald City.

This musical stayed true to the classic and stayed entertaining. The plot was rich and expressed the talent all of these actors posses. This is a performance all ages would love and will not want to miss. Hopefully you are all off the see The Wizard, the wonderful “Wizard of Oz!”

Ira Glass
by Terradawn Laughton - West Anchorage High School

In a unique and long-awaited presentation, This American Life’s Ira Glass brought hearty laughter to the Atwood Concert on Sunday afternoon. Glass’ ninety-minute one-man-show is a combination of his philosophy, his work process, and his past shows. Glass took the stage and began the afternoon in complete darkness; “It’s radio, after all,” he joked. Luckily the stage was soon illuminated, as were Glass’ priceless expressions throughout the show. The program began with a foray into the production and investigative side of This American Life. Glass explained where his team finds their stories, what exactly they look for, and the importance of the structure of their storytelling. True to his radio background, the sole visual element of the afternoon came when Glass took a brief break to, of all things, make a balloon animal. (He claimed the skill has come in quite handy in social situations.) Nevertheless, the show was satisfying, informative and very enjoyable. Glass was introduced as the man with the most popular podcast in America; after an hour and a half of his witty, self-deprecating humor and enjoyably quirky personality, even new fans understood why.

Oh New York, New York
By Dominique Williams
– East Anchorage High School

The Anchorage Symphony Finale: NY, NY featured on Saturday April 17, 2010. The night paid tribute to the beautiful city and featured the amazing Harlem Quartet.

The night started out with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni: Overture.” This piece was performed clean and showed just how dynamic ASO can be. The next piece was, “Delights and Dances for String Quartet and String Orchestra,” by Michael Ables. This was the first piece with the quartet. This song had a groove to it and showed the quartet’s chemistry as well as the orchestra’s great dynamics and smooth transitions. Following this was “Concerto for String Quartet and String Orchestra (The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow),” by Jon Deak. This piece’s narration was by Harlem Quartet’s Cellist, Desmond Neysmith. This added a fun touch to the very intricate selection. After this was the Harlem Quartet’s last piece “Take the A-Train,” by Duke Ellington. This selection was fun, playful, and jazzy. By intermission there were four standing ovations.

Post intermission the Orchestra recommenced with a bang. “Festival Coronation March,” by Tchaikovsky was the most fortified piece of the night. Following this was “Symphonic Dances From West Side Story,” by Bernstein. This was a fun ending to a great season. This piece told a story and had beautiful transition in the story line. This dynamic piece brought the final standing ovation to a great night of music.
